What Record Did Bumrah Break?

Bumrah surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev’s record for probably the most five-wicket hauls in away Tests for India.

After missing the second Test, Bumrah returned to the ‘Home of Cricket’ along with his form intact. His precise lines and difficult lengths left England’s elite batters stunned. Bumrah took his tally to 13 in away Tests, attained in 35 matches. This broke Kapil Dev’s record of 12 five-wicket hauls in 66 away Tests for India. Former spinner Anil Kumble is now third with 10 five-wicket hauls in 69 away Tests.

In 47 Tests, Bumrah has gathered 215 wickets at a median of 19.49, with best figures of 6/27 and 15 five-wicket hauls. Across all formats, in 206 appearances, Bumrah has taken 453 wickets at a median of 20.48, with best figures of 6/19 and 17 five-wicket hauls. This spell also brought him level with the ‘Sultan of Swing,’ Wasim Akram, for probably the most five-wicket hauls by an Asian in SENA countries (South Africa, England, Recent Zealand, and Australia), each holding 11.

On the primary day, Bumrah began his wicket-taking run by bowling Harry Brook. On the second day, he continued his excellent form, dismissing England Test captain Ben Stokes (44) with an outstanding delivery. Later, he bowled Joe Root, who had scored a Test century, for 104 (199).

Following this, Bumrah successfully appealed for a caught-behind decision against Chris Woakes, who was dismissed for a golden duck after a review confirmed the sting. Bumrah concluded his outstanding performance by taking Jofra Archer’s wicket. England was all out for 397, and Bumrah received applause from the spectators as he returned with figures of 5/74 in 27 overs.
