A once-aspiring tennis player has been shot dead by her own father in India.
Radhika Yadav, 25, was shot dead by Deepak Yadav, 49, within the kitchen of their home in Gurugram yesterday.
She is alleged to have been cooking when he shot her within the back.
Several theories have already emerged about possible motives for the tragedy.
The fundamental one at this early stage is a falling out between the relatives over Radhika’s tennis academy.
Station House Officer Inspector Vinod Kumar told The Indian Express: ‘He (Deepak) had been upset for some time as he was being taunted by locals over his daughter’s income.
‘He was troubled by their remarks – they’d keep saying the home is running on her money, and he is just too depending on that.
‘He had asked her (Radhika) several times earlier to stop working on the academy, but she refused. He couldn’t take it anymore.’

Yadav himself is quoted as confirming it by NDTV, apparently telling police: ‘Once I used to go to Wazirabad village to get milk, people used to taunt me, saying that I live off my daughter’s earnings.
‘This troubled me rather a lot. Some people even questioned my daughter’s character. I told my daughter to shut her tennis academy, but she refused.
‘This case kept bothering me because it hurt my dignity. I used to be very troubled and stressed.
‘For this reason tension, I took out my licensed revolver, and when my daughter Radhika was cooking within the kitchen, I shot her 3 times from behind, hitting her waist.
‘I actually have killed my daughter.’

Other sources have claimed the pair’s relationship cracked after Radhika appeared in a music video which her father objected to and demanded she remove from her social media.
The case once more puts a highlight on the best way the country treats its women.
While many cases making global headlines involve sexual violence, one in three women (33%) faced domestic abuse from partners and relatives between 2019 and 2021, in response to a recent study.
In line with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) website, Radhika had played 36 singles matches and seven doubles matches in her profession.
She last played singles in March 2024, and doubles in June 2023.
