Liverpool have confirmed plans to retire the no20 jersey in memory of Diogo Jota.

Jota and his brother Andre were tragically killed in a automobile accident in northwestern Spain last Thursday.

The brothers were laid to rest of their hometown of Gondomar on Saturday.

The football world has mourned the lack of the Liverpool star and his brother with plenty of tributes already going down during Club World Cup games and at Euro 2025.

Jota was a key member of the Liverpool squad since arriving from Wolves in 2020, helping the club lift the Premier League title last season.

An announcement from Liverpool said: ‘After consultation together with his wife, Rute, and family, the club can announce the squad number can be retired in honour and memory of Diogo across all levels, including LFC Women and Academy.

‘The move is recognition of not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds’ on-pitch successes over the past five years, but in addition the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues and supporters and the everlasting connections he built with them.’

Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards added: ‘As a club, we were all aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt the exact same way.

‘“’It was vitally essential to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the choice and to make sure they were the primary to know of our intention.

‘I consider that is the primary time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon a person. Subsequently, we will say this can be a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.

‘By retiring this squad number, we’re making it everlasting – and due to this fact never to be forgotten.

‘Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore – with honour, distinction and affection – the number 20.

‘So far as Liverpool Football Club is worried, he can be endlessly our number 20.’

Liverpool will begin their pre-season campaign against Preston North End on Sunday – their first match since last week’s heartbreaking news.

Tributes are being planned with Preston to put a wreath in front of away supporters with a minute’s silence to be observed ahead of kick-off. Each sets of players can even wear black armbands.
