Former India cricketer and chief selector of the senior men’s team, Ajit Agarkar, has said that his previous jobs as a commentator and a player were way easier than his current profile as a chief selector, saying that the latter involves making careers of players, even while keeping in mind that he cannot please everyone.
After retiring in 2007, Agarkar moved into cricket commentary before taking up his current role as BCCI’s chairman of selectors.
When asked to match his cricketing roles, Agarkar said that being a selector has been the hardest, while his playing days provided the best satisfaction.
“I’ll probably go along with the better one first. Being a commentator and I mean no disrespect, you continue to work hard, spend hours on the bottom. So long as you get the correct words out, your job as a commentator is finished and also you go home,” Agarkar said while speaking on the NDTV World Summit.
“Playing gives you probably the most satisfaction. Each time you step on the sphere, you recognize your job is on the road, your house is on the road. One thing that goes for you as a player is that the ball or bat is in your hand,” Agarkar added.
The previous Indian cricketer said that his current job as a selector is tough due to country’s problem of plenty.
“As a selector, once you choose a squad of 15, there’s nothing else in your hand. It’s difficult due to depth of cricketers we have now in the intervening time. Plenty of things are out of your hands,” Agarkar said.
“It’s an enormous responsibility. When you’ve been a player, you recognize that you just are shaping careers. A call that you just make can impact a player’s profession in a superb or a nasty way. You may’t please everyone,” Agarkar added.
