Police launch an urgent hunt for the gunmen who fled a bar on motorbikes after shooting a Brit dead during a phone robbery.

The 68-year-old was sitting on the bar in Tema in Ghana, when six men approached and tried to steal his phone on Friday.

The victim, named as Ashraf Qarmar Parvez, was shot dead as he tried to wrestle his phone back.

The gunman then fled on motorbikes with the opposite robbers.

The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Tema General Hospital.

A 9mm shell was retrieved from the scene, while witnesses have been interviewed to help the police’s ongoing investigation and urgent search operation to seek out the killers.

Security concerns in the economic city of Tema have been raised, but a neighborhood police spokesperson told the BBC that the shooting was a rare incident.

Tema, positioned roughly 15 miles east of Accra, is Ghana’s foremost seaport and industrial hub.

This also comes after police have intensified operations against armed robbery groups, reported News Ghana.

In September 2025, officers successfully dismantled a 15-member gang accountable for a violent robbery spree targeting banks.

In an announcement, police said: ‘Two of the assailants approached the group, and certainly one of them snatched the victim’s cell phone from the table.

‘When the victim attempted to retrieve his phone, certainly one of the suspects shot, and the gang fled the scene on their motorbikes.

‘The Tema Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale operation to trace down the perpetrators.’

An FCDO spokesperson told Metro: ‘We’re supporting the family of a person who has died in Ghana.’
