A minimum of eight individuals are believed to be dead after a parked automobile exploded near a busy metro station in Delhi, India.

Police are on high alert, in keeping with local media, and the blast injured greater than a dozen other passersby.

Eight of the victims died en path to the hospital, in keeping with local police, with 15 others considered in serious condition.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the explosion happened as a vehicle was moving slowly before stopping at a red light.

‘An explosion happened in that vehicle, and as a result of the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged. Some people have died, and a few have been injured within the incident,’ he said.

The parked automobile was near the Red Fort metro station, which is within the southern area of Delhi.

A member of the Delhi Fire Department told The Hindu: ‘The intensity was quite high. Injuries are feared.’

A big police cordon is in place while police investigate. It’s not been confirmed that the explosion was attributable to a bomb.

An empty shell of the automobile and the wrangled wreckage of nearby vehicles were seen in a video shared on X.

Video footage on social media showed multiple ambulances rushing towards the scene, while firefighters worked to tackle the blaze.

Pawan Khera, Chairman of the media & publicity department of India’s Congress, said: ‘On this hour of grief, we stand with the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.

‘The federal government must ensure a radical and speedy investigation into the incident.’
