Thursday (November 17) got off to a worrying start for the England men’s team in Australia, with pacer Mark Wood happening with ‘hamstring stiffness’ during a warm-up match against England Lions in Perth. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in an announcement said that he’ll now undergo a ‘precautionary scan’ on Friday but is ‘expected to bowl again’ in a few days.
Wood is the leader of the English pace attack for the upcoming 2025-26 Ashes down under. He last featured within the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, where he suffered a medial ligament damage in his left knee, and missed all competitive cricket for the rest of the yr.
“Mark Wood is ready to undergo a precautionary scan on Friday Nov 14, after suffering hamstring stiffness during Day 1 of England’s warm-up game against England Lions in Perth,” the statement said. “The England fast bowler spent time without work the sphere in the course of the afternoon session, having accomplished eight overs with the ball. He is predicted to bowl again in two days time.”
The statement indiciated that he’s unlikely to take the sphere in the meanwhile. England would hope that the scans don’t reveal anything major because a lot of the bowling attack around him is playing its first Ashes.
The legendary James Anderson was nudged into retirement and England closed the gate on Chris Woakes, too, by not allowing him the prospect to recuperate from his injury and make a case for the Ashes. If Wood misses the primary Test, which begins on the Perth Stadium on November 21, the English pace attack shall be comprised of Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and one Matthew Potts and Josh Tongue. The latter three are yet to play a Test in Australia.
England squad: Ben Stokes (C), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue and Mark Wood.
Australia have their very own injury concerns. Pat Cummins and Sean Abbott are set to the miss the opening Ashes Test, while Josh Hazlewood has also been cleared recently.
