India proceed to play catch-up within the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati because the tourists have built an enormous lead without showing any urgency to declare on Day 4. South Africa lead the two-match series 1-0 and are eyeing a rare away series sweep in India.
Legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is staying positive of a late India comeback but is nervous that the players could have given up, stating the body language of their stand-in captain Rishabh Pant.
“I actually hope we are able to bounce back while batting within the 2nd innings, however the indications on the sector with respect to body language,” Ashwin posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Pant made his Test captaincy debut in the continuing contest with regular skipper Shubman Gill missing out on account of a neck injury he suffered while batting at Eden Gardens earlier this month.
Pant has the tough task of ensuring India finish the series on level terms to avoid a whitewash after losing the Kolkata Test inside three days.
The wicketkeeper-batter has been under fire for the style during which he lost his wicket on the second day when he edged one from Marco Jansen to be caught-behind, leaving his team in serious trouble.
“It’s not like this was a Kolkata pitch where every ball bowled on an excellent length had its name written on it. It’s not like that. It’s an excellent surface, just hang in there. You’re going to get the loose ball. It’s not like Marco Jansen goes to bowl 20 overs on the trot. He’s going to bowl one spell. You may have got to hold in there. That is Test match cricket. Just bat session after session. It is a pitch where you could have to bat long,” Kumble said on Star Sports.
South Africa had skittled India for 201 after posting 489 of their first dig to take an enormous first-innings lead.
