Indian cricket icon Rohit Sharma was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree by Ajeenkya DY Patil University during its tenth Convocation Ceremony on January 24, 2026. Unable to attend in person on account of an urgent BCCI meeting, he conveyed his gratitude through a video message.

In his message, Rohit emphasized the values of preparation, leading an easy life, and maintaining momentum and resilience. He also spoke about turning challenges and setbacks into useful learning experiences. You may watch the video here:

The university had earlier announced that Rohit could be a significant highlight of the milestone convocation, which proved to be a star-studded event.

“While fans know him because the ‘Hitman’ of cricket, today marks a distinct type of milestone for Rohit Sharma,” the university said in an announcement.

The ceremony, led by the University’s President and Chancellor Dr. Ajeenkya D Y Patil, recognized Rohit for his remarkable contributions to cricket and his exemplary leadership on the worldwide stage.

“By bestowing this Honorary Doctorate, ADYPU recognises the values of resilience and strategy that he represents – qualities that resonate deeply with the graduating class of 2026,” the statement added.

Rohit Sharma’s Outstanding Leadership

Before becoming India’s captain and winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma had already built a powerful legacy within the IPL. Known for his calm and strategic leadership, he led Mumbai Indians to 5 titles, becoming the league’s most successful captain.

His success with MI paved the way in which for his elevation after Virat Kohli stepped down. As national captain, Rohit transformed India’s white-ball cricket with an aggressive style, earning praise from young cricketers for his ability to encourage trust, ease, and peak performance in his team.
