Erik ten Hag had previously worked with Onana at Ajax and pushed United’s hierarchy to explore a bid to prise the Cameroon international away from the San Siro.

But in between the occasional flash of promise, Onana badly struggled to hit the heights expected of him across two error-strewn seasons between the sticks in English football.

Senne Lammens’ deadline-day switch from Royal Antwerp to United last summer threw Onana’s Old Trafford future into even further doubt – and the shot-stopper went on to affix Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

Determined to rebuild his repute, Onana has since gone on to make 16 appearances in all competitions for Trabzonspor, who currently sit third within the Turkish Super Lig table.

In keeping with Day by day Mail Sport, Onana has not completely given up hope of reviving his United profession. Nevertheless, it’s ‘expected’ he’ll leave on a everlasting basis next summer.

Asked what Michael Carrick had done to show United’s fortunes around since replacing Ruben Amorim, Lammens replied: ‘I’m gonna be honest, there should not many special things he did. It’s identical to sticking to the fundamentals.

‘Football is basics. In case you do the fundamentals well, then the standard of us comes out and I feel we have now players with the standard that could make the difference.

‘But should you just do the fundamentals right, technically we’re standing right, defending good together. And just [playing] as a team, to be honest.

‘He made it really clear what he wants from us and what he expects from us. And I feel today as well, on the pitch sometimes it didn’t really come out.

‘But should you fight as a team and should you keep believing in it, you then can still get the win.’

Given the additional ‘exertions’ the squad put in away from home, Lammens felt much more satisfaction from winning at Arsenal than beating Manchester City.

‘I feel it was considered one of the higher ones, higher feelings of my profession, to be honest. Away as well,’ Lammens added.

‘Whilst last week [against Manchester City] was at home, which can also be very nice and really special, this one felt like somewhat bit more exertions.

‘It wasn’t at all times the most effective play from us, but also they are games you may have to win if you would like to be at the highest. So today we did that.

‘I feel just exertions, defending together, after which at the top, the subs like Matheus Cunha made a difference, and likewise, the individuals who are available in give our team energy.

‘I feel winning at Anfield and winning at Arsenal is at all times considered one of the more special ones, especially for me in my first season as well.

‘So it’s something I actually look ahead to ‘ these big away games. And yeah, it’s very nice to win them each.’
