Nine people have been killed and 25 injured in a mass shooting in a distant town in Canada.

Six people were shot dead in Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and one person died on the technique to the hospital.

Two more people were found dead inside a house in Tumbler Ridge, in British Columbia in western Canada.

The shooter – who the police said was described as female – was also found dead inside the college from ‘a self-inflicted injury’.

Pupils within the close-knit school described how they barricaded themselves inside their classrooms for 2 hours during what has turn into considered one of the deadliest school shootings within the country’s history.

The emergency alert sent to Tumbler Ridge locals because the shooting unfolded described the suspect as ‘female in a dress with brown hair’.

A minimum of two other people were rushed to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they imagine the fatal shooting at the college and residential are linked.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was ‘devastated by the shooting’.

He added: ‘My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who’ve lost family members to those horrific acts of violence.

‘I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been modified irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the primary responders who risked their lives to guard their fellow residents.’

British Columbia Premier David Eby told reporters: ‘It’s hard to know what to say on an evening like tonight. It’s the form of thing that appears like it happens in different places and never near home.’

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has 160 students roughly aged 12 to 18, in line with its website.

The college was closed for the remaining of the week and counseling might be made available to those in need, school officials said.
