Ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood said he ‘felt sorry’ for Frank following his sacking but insisted it felt like an ‘inevitable’ end result for the 52-year-old Dane.

‘I believe for those who’ve seen Thomas Frank’s form of play down the years you’d have known that it was not possible he was going to vary his style,’ Sherwood said on Sky Sports. ‘It was successful for him at Brentford.

‘I believe the character of the job at Tottenham, comparing it to Brentford, it’s a very different animal. The expectation at Tottenham, you’ll be able to’t just win a game, lose one, draw a pair… it’s not acceptable, especially once you’re at home.

‘The fans wish to be entertained and so they want to achieve success and he didn’t give any of that.

‘I feel sorry for him, you usually feel sorry for any manager who loses his job, but I just felt it was inevitable in the long run.

‘They now find themselves in a extremely tricky position, this balancing act between now and the summer when there’s going to an entire host of managers who would love to take the Tottenham job.’

Asked about Frank’s future managerial prospects, Sherwood added: ‘I’m sure Thomas will go on and manage elsewhere.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw him at Crystal Palace. I believe that’s a improbable fit for him.

‘But Tottenham Hotspur, I realize it’s in hindsight, but I said it when he did are available: I’m undecided about this appointment since you’re asking a person, knowing clearly how he plays, is that what the Tottenham fans wish to see?

‘The reply for me, I do know the sport and I’ve been in it for a very long time, would have been no. And that’s the best way it panned out.’

Tottenham are faring even worse, after all, and Sherwood insists his former club are ‘in a relegation battle’.

‘Tottenham fans are looking down quite than up which isn’t a really positive sign. They’re 100 per cent in a relegation battle and it’s not necessarily for the interim manager to go in and to fret about performances an excessive amount of.

‘He’s just got to focus on results, it’s all concerning the results now and just digging them out.’
