Cricket Australia (CA) is planning to bring veteran, in-form batsman Steve Smith into the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, as Mitchell Marsh faces a groin injury ahead of their match against Ireland. Marsh suffered the injury during a recent training session, ruling him out of the group stage game in Colombo on Wednesday, February 11.
“He’s experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding and he would require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play might be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.”
“Stand by player Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required,” an official statement read.
Marsh Injury Adds to Australia’s World Cup Concerns
Marsh’s absence is the newest setback for Australia as they prepare for his or her World Cup campaign. The seasoned fast-bowling pair of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were recently sidelined from the tournament with long-term injuries. Following their withdrawal, pace-bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott was brought in as a substitute.
From the present squad, Australia can select to advertise either Josh Inglis or Cameron Green to open the batting in Marsh’s absence. When it comes to captaincy, Travis Head has taken charge on the toss. He has previously captained the side on two occasions, most recently in the primary T20I against Pakistan in Lahore.
“Yeah, we have now had a few injuries. Marsh got himself injured, but a few boys are back from the Pakistan series. Now we have a powerful team and eagerly looking forward,” Travis Head said on the toss.
After winning the toss, Australia selected to bat first and are still without the injured Tim David. Nonetheless, bowlers Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa have recovered and are included within the playing XI.
