The Boston Bruins made a little bit of a surprising move on Wednesday. They recalled goaltender Michael DiPietro from the AHL’s Windfall Bruins under emergency conditions. The emergency designation on the recall had some fans concerned over the character of the move. Nevertheless, the move is just not the results of anything serious.
NHL teams are allowed to practice again, per the principles of the league’s Olympic break. The Bruins indeed returned to the practice rink. Nevertheless, there was one major problem: they did not have enough goaltenders to practice with. Because of this, DiPietro was recalled.
“With each Joonas Korpisalo and Jeremy Swayman still in Milan representing their countries as quarterfinals play gets underway, the Bruins needed to make a call right down to the P-Bruins for a goaltender at practice,” Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Hub recently explained.
This type of move is just not unusual during international breaks. Anderson identified that the Bruins made this move last season in the course of the 4 Nations Faceoff Tournament. Moreover, teams across the league have made emergency recalls to fill out their rosters for practice this 12 months.
As a matter of fact, the Bruins might have to do that once more. Each Korpisalo and Swayman are still representing their countries on the 2026 Winter Olympics. Swayman and Team USA will face Slovakia within the semifinals, while Korpisalo’s Finland will tackle Canada.
The gold medal game will happen on Saturday morning. And there’s a legitimate probability each Bruins goaltenders face one another for golden glory in Milan.
