Roddy Piper never held a WWE World Championship, but reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has paid tribute to the late legend.
Punk recently visited WWE’s headquarters, where he adorned a statue of Piper with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
The statue was forged of bronze and revealed in April 2019 as a part of the WrestleMania 35 festivities for Piper’s contributions to pro wrestling.
Punk’s devotion to Piper isn’t any secret, and in 2024, Punk spoke with Roots of Fight and shared how Piper inspired his wrestling journey. He said,
“Piper is special to me because Piper was, and is, the explanation I became an expert wrestler. I’m from the Midwest, so we predominantly got WWE television. So I saw Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, all these big, giant dudes after which you already know, you discover Roddy Piper and he’s a ‘smaller’ guy, just talking mass amounts of s*** and he was on my television. So, I just figured he was a millionaire and I used to be like, ‘That’s it. That’s what I need to do.’”
Piper died in his sleep on July 31, 2015, on the age of 61 in Los Angeles, California. His death certificate cites a cardiopulmonary arrest brought on by hypertension.
