Emile Heskey ‘rates’ Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko but believes Michael Carrick should proceed to make use of the £74m summer signing from the bench.

Sesko has improved his output since Carrick’s appointment as caretaker manager, scoring five goals in his last six matches.

The previous RB Leipzig forward only scored two goals in 21 appearances under Ruben Amorim, who was sacked last month.

Many pundits were questioning Manchester United’s £74m deal for Sesko, who was signed to resolve the club’s goalscoring issues.

However the Slovenia international has contributed to Carrick’s unbeaten start, scoring injury-time goals within the 3-2 win over Fulham and 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Sesko will hope to proceed to impress in Monday’s Premier League clash with Everton but Heskey believes he should remain on the bench, urging Carrick to begin Matheus Cunha up front.

‘The centre-forward position is a difficult one for Manchester United in the meanwhile,’ former England striker Heskey told aGamble.

‘I rate Benjamin Sesko and would love to see him start because he’s a more traditional striker, but then the problem is how best to slot in Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo into the primary team as well.

‘If I were Michael Carrick, I’d start Cunha up front over the opposite options. I feel he gives the attack a bit more mobility and he’s began so strongly on the club.

‘He’d be my pick of the collection of forwards United have at their disposal.’

Talking to OLBG, Heskey added: ‘Can Sesko succeed at Manchester United? I feel he’s found it difficult as well, to be honest with you, but I quite like him.

‘He’s scored a few goals currently and I quite like him but that is the thing I feel the entire players have.

‘Technically he’s superb but while you’re playing in that environment, the pressure of Manchester United will not be easy. There’s a certain expectation.

‘I remember moving from Leicester to Liverpool and it was totally different. There’s a must win mentality. You’re not pondering if we win. No. There’s a must.

‘There’s a must win for trophies too. There’s a must win going into every game.’

Manchester United are fourth within the Premier League ahead of Monday’s clash, while Everton are eighth.

Everton beat Amorim’s United 1-0 at Old Trafford within the corresponding fixture despite twiddling with ten men for nearly all of the match.
