Still, not everyone felt comfortable with the campaign. Some online commenters questioned why a star of “Dawson’s Creek” would want financial help.

One critic wrote, “This doesn’t sit right with me. Under no circumstances. Sure, I get it. But hundreds of individuals world wide face this exact situation every single day and take care of the struggle.”  They added, “He needed to have had life insurance … and residual checks.”

The criticism grew louder after reports suggested that James Van Der Beek had secured a down payment on a Texas ranch shortly before his death.

That fueled speculation that he had extra money than people realized.

While Van Der Beek became a household name playing Dawson Leery, early TV contracts were rarely lucrative for young actors.

Initially of his profession, he was reportedly paid modestly. In accordance with a Warner Bros insider, every actor solid for “Dawson’s Creek” was unknown on the time.

“Katie Holmes was solid from a house video on her kitchen counter. I can’t imagine James had any points,” they said.

Nevertheless, salaries increased over time, possibly reaching six figures per episode in later seasons, but residual deals in that era were often limited.

In an interview with Today, Van Der Beek admitted, “There was no residual money,” adding, “I used to be 20. It was a nasty contract.”
