In a big boost to sports within the region, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced a money reward of Rs 2 crore for the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team following their historic Ranji Trophy victory.

Describing it as a defining moment for Jammu and Kashmir cricket, Abdullah noted that the win has instilled immense pride and motivation throughout the region.

On X, Abdullah revealed the money reward of Rs 2 crore for each the players and support staff after their “emphatic” overcome Karnataka on the latter’s home ground.

Abdullah was present in Hubbali, Karnataka, on Friday to support the J&K team, which had secured a dominant first-innings lead and was well on its technique to clinching the title for the primary time.

“The players may also be entitled to government appointments under the recently notified rules for outstanding sportspersons,” Abdullah said.

Jammu and Kashmir’s fairytale run in Indian domestic cricket culminated of their first-ever Ranji Trophy title, as they outclassed the formidable Karnataka team in a memorable final. With a considerable 291-run lead after the primary innings, J&K ensured the match led to a draw, ending at 342/4 of their second innings on the last day, thus extending their overall advantage to 633 runs.

Opener Qamran Iqbal remained unbeaten on 160, while Sahil Lotra notched up his first-class century (101*), showcasing the visitors’ dominance. Having joined the competition 67 years ago, J&K finally transformed their potential into glory after previous quarterfinal setbacks. On the KSCA Stadium, they exhibited remarkable composure against the eight-time champions, laden with India stars.

Auqib Nabi led the charge with one other five-wicket haul, and captain Paras Dogra surpassed the ten,000-run milestone. Significant contributions from Shubham Pundir, Abdul Samad, and others highlighted a collective effort throughout a unprecedented season.

From an initial defeat against Mumbai to an exhilarating semifinal comeback against Bengal, J&K’s journey gathered momentum steadily. Karnataka, in pursuit of their ninth title, were tactically outplayed.

When the captains shook hands at 2:10 pm, history was made, a victory that guarantees to encourage, fill the region with pride, and rekindle sporting aspirations.
