Emanuel Navarrete left with two belts Saturday night, however the unification bout exposed more about Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez than it elevated the champion.
Navarrete scored an Eleventh-round TKO, the stoppage coming one second into the round, of their super featherweight title fight at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The ringside physician halted the competition before round 12 after reviewing the damage to Nunez, who had been cut under his right eye within the fifth and was bleeding heavily by the tenth.
The matchup had been billed as a hard-hitting all-Mexican showdown. As a substitute, it unfolded in a single direction. Navarrete pressed forward and let his hands go, but he was not forced into anything special. Nunez appeared undersized and hesitant to interact. Because the shorter man, he struggled to ascertain position on the within and sometimes gave ground without making Navarrete pay.
There have been moments of exchange within the early rounds, yet Nunez’s power never became an element. He did not earn Navarrete’s respect and didn’t impose himself at close range. Because the rounds passed, the regular output from Navarrete added up. The cut from round five worsened, and by round 10 the bleeding was difficult to disregard.
Navarrete continued working behind pressure and volume. Nunez stayed upright and objected when the fight was stopped, but his return fire had faded and the physical damage was visible. The doctor’s call before the ultimate round confirmed what the ultimate stretch had shown.
Navarrete improves to 40-2-1 with 33 knockouts and adds the IBF title to his WBO belt at 130 kilos. Nunez absorbs his first loss at this level after a performance that didn’t match the stage. He’ll need a far stronger showing the following time he steps into this class of fight.
