Filmmaker Reveals Robert Carradine’s Behavior During Final Conversation

Robert Carradine was preparing to step back in front of the camera for a brand new film role just weeks before his death, and now, the project is about to turn into a tribute to his legacy. The late actor had been solid in “The Driver,” a mafia movie directed by Connie Lamothe, where he was slated to portray crime boss Antonio Politano. Production had finally resumed after years of pandemic-related delays, making the chance especially meaningful for Carradine. Following his passing at age 71, Lamothe is sharing details about their final interactions and the way the film will move forward while honoring Robert Carradine’s memory.

In line with Lamothe, there have been no obvious signs that anything was unsuitable during their last discussion in mid-January. “The last conversation was positive and upbeat,” she told Day by day Mail. “He spoke to Wayne [Shipley, his friend/Lamothe’s colleague] and was good to go. There was nothing that suggested otherwise. That was in the course of January. The discussion was mostly about specifics for the table read.”

The director said Robert Carradine had been keen about joining the project after years of delays. “Bobby was very gung-ho about that. Wanted to return. Definitely desired to do it. And in order that was great. So we got all the things all set. We had set the date for February 21, and Wayne, to be honest, was doing a lot of the communicating with Bobby, and rapidly he just stopped,” she continued. “There was just nothing more. No information period.”

Silence Sparked Concern Amongst The Production Team

Lamothe admitted that she and her colleague became frightened when communication suddenly stopped, but selected to present the actor space.“Wayne and I were concerned about that, but some actors try this,” she said. “To not be unfair or unkind, but sometimes that just happens. We wanted to only type of let it ride out a bit of bit and provides him some space, depending on whatever was happening with him. And so that is what we thought we were doing.”

Because they’d not heard from him, the production team eventually moved the date of the table read, something Robert Carradine never knew. “So we didn’t hear from him, so we decided we were going to go ahead and alter the date, which we did,” she continued. “Bobby never knew that. He didn’t know that the date modified to the 14th of March.”

That realization has weighed heavily on the director.

“That, for me, was really upsetting, because whenever you do not know actually what the main points are and what he can have been going through,” she admitted. “I believe that was just the toughest part for me was considering that was considering that.”

Lamothe added, “I hope, because he’s an actor, that he didn’t have any guilt or simply feelings about, ‘I comprehend it was this weekend. I didn’t go, I wasn’t there. I let everybody down.’ And so I’ve type of mulled that over a bit of bit and felt really bad about it. To be frank, whatever happened could have had absolutely nothing on the planet to do with what we were doing. I do not know that, but just being a individual that cares, I just would not wish to think that.”

Film Will Be Dedicated To Carradine’s Memory

Although the role will now be recast, Lamothe said there was never any doubt the film would honor Robert Carradine. “I’m really sad that we do not get to try this, but we will go ahead and make the [table] reading in his honor,” she said. “We’ll dedicate the film to him, indisputably, because I believe he deserved the part. And you understand, just in my mind, he was that part.”

Lamothe also believes the project can have been Carradine’s final scheduled role, telling the outlet, “So far as what I do know and what I have been told, that was the very last thing he had, you understand?”

Robert Carradine’s family confirmed his death in an announcement, revealing he had struggled with bipolar disorder for nearly 20 years. “It’s with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away,” his family announced on Monday.

The statement continued, “In a world that may feel so dark, Bobby was all the time a beacon of sunshine to everyone around him.”
