Legendary Sunil Gavaskar expressed that it’s inappropriate for spectators to be urged to chant Jasprit Bumrah’s name while the Indian pacer is in his delivery stride during an important event just like the ICC T20 World Cup semifinal match.

Through the second semifinal between India and England on the Wankhede Stadium, the DJ encouraged the group to chant “Boom Boom Bumrah” as Bumrah prepared to bowl.

“Asking the group to chant ‘Boom Boom Bumrah’ while he’s bowling will not be a superb idea. They’ll do it between overs, but not through the over. It is a World Cup,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on commentary.

Please, No Light Show!

Previously, each Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri had strongly criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) for organising a laser show during a tense T20 World Cup Super 8 clash between India and the West Indies on the Eden Gardens.

“The laser show through the two-and-a-half or three minutes of the drinks break… it’s challenging on the batters, or anybody for that matter,” Gavaskar said on commentary.

“To get your eyes used to the sunshine, to get the intense lights again, you’ve darkness around you,” he added.

“You’ve got a laser thing happening. That is the World Cup. And for 2 and a half minutes, do you wish this type of entertainment?

“Within the IPL, it’s effective in the midst of the IPL. Not within the knockouts, but in the midst of the IPL, that’s effective. But for the time being here, within the World Cup, do we want these laser shows in the midst of the drinks break, on the drinks interval?”

Shastri agreed, stressing the impact on players’ concentration.

“And from the players’ viewpoint, to modify back on, is rarely easy. It’s serious stuff.”
