Ahead of Team India’s semifinal match against England within the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel praised opener Sanju Samson for his stunning show against the West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal, applauding how he didn’t lose hope and kept on working despite poor form.
Speaking ahead of the match within the pre-match presser, Morne Morkel said, “Coming to Sanju, a high quality player. I don’t think there was lots of conversation (ahead of the semifinals). He’s a man that at all times works hard on the nets.”
‘For him, it was at all times at nets to be sure he gets the standard work in’ – Morne Morkel on Sanju Samson
“And yeah, I feel just with that type of opportunity he got, he showed his class and his experience. He got the chance, and as a man that has played lots of games, he stepped up in a vital game. From a training or from a mentor type of side, it was nearly giving him the backing,” he shared again.
“Although he type of lost his place within the team. For him, it was at all times at nets to be sure he gets the standard work in. Since you never know in a tournament that a situation as we found ourselves can at all times be there. So credit to him for not losing that hope and keeping on working hard and sticking to his strengths. After which taking the chance. I feel in skilled sports, it’s all about staying ready. Credit to him for keeping calm and fighting through that tough little period,” he concluded.
In three T20 WC matches to this point, Sanju Samson scored 143 runs at a median of 71.50 and a strike rate of 195.89, with a fifty as well.
