Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) turned skilled with the ambition of breaking Tyson’s record because the youngest heavyweight champion in history. Tyson set that mark in November 1986 when he stopped Trevor Berbick to win the WBC title.
While Itauma’s early rise has generated excitement, his skilled résumé stays limited. The 20-year-old has fought only 26 rounds across 13 bouts, averaging just over two rounds per fight. Two of his contests went the space during scheduled six-round fights early in his profession. Since then, none of his opponents have heard the bell to start round three.
Those quick finishes highlight Itauma’s two-handed power but in addition leave unanswered questions on how he performs in longer fights against experienced opposition.
Franklin (24-2, 15 KOs) enters as probably the most established opponent of Itauma’s profession. The American has previously gone the space with top heavyweights and has the sturdiness to increase fights into deeper rounds.
The bout was originally scheduled for January before being postponed after Itauma suffered a bicep injury. The March 28 rescheduling now places the heavyweight prospect back in motion.
For Itauma, the fight provides one other step in a profession that has developed rapidly since his skilled debut. For Franklin, it presents a chance to halt the momentum of considered one of boxing’s fastest-rising heavyweights.
