9-1-1’s Eddie Diaz and Evan “Buck” Buckley are ready for the journey of a lifetime — but their fun-filled road trip is about to show right into a total nightmare.
In Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek on the Thursday, March 12, season 9 episode, titled “Mother’s Boy,” Eddie (Ryan Guzman) and Buck (Oliver Stark) are cruising back from the National Firefighter Games in Nashville and headed home to Los Angeles when disaster strikes.
Moments before the chaos ensues, the pair are seemingly making amends after a disagreement as Buck tells Eddie, “I’m sorry I called you gloomy. And I’m sorry I got us lost,” to which Eddie replies, “No, you were right. We each decided to go the backroads.”
That’s when Eddie notices a big, suped-up truck tailing them with high beams glaring of their mirrors. As Eddie tries to drive away from the automotive, it hastens, running him off the road. Buck attempts to call 9-1-1 before things worsen, but there’s no service out in the course of nowhere.
“Hang on!” Eddie yells because the truck accelerates and starts jamming them from behind. He begins to lose control of the wheel before the scene cuts to black.
“Mother’s Boy,” which is the primary episode following 9-1-1’s crossover with 9-1-1: Nashville earlier this month, follows Eddie and Buck as their flight back to Los Angeles gets canceled. Hoping to be home for Hen’s (Aisha Hinds) birthday, they resolve a cross-country road trip is the fastest way, until they get off course and Buck goes missing.
While chatting with TV Fanatic, Stark, 36, previously hinted that Buck can have a “very trying” end of season after the mysterious events of episode 13.

“He’s really going to be put through it and need to take care of some latest things, and the repercussions usually are not going to be something he moves past particularly quickly,” he explained. “So, he’s got a tricky little road coming up. Then, as we move towards the top of the season, some big changes for him and a few big inquiries to be answered, and a few decisions to be made by way of what his life might appear like going forward.”
Stark also told Entertainment Weekly that viewers should expect a special tone throughout “Mother’s Boy,” which he said felt like shooting a “different show” than 9-1-1. “The look of the show could be very different,” he said. “It was just a very enjoyable, refreshing experience.”
Guzman, meanwhile, echoed Stark’s sentiments, saying the episode really does feel “like its own thing.”
“The way in which it was shot, the coloring — every little thing is somewhat darker,” Guzman explained, before adding, “Nevertheless it at all times has to have some levity. It’s 9-1-1 at the top of the day.”
9-1-1 season 9 episode 13 airs on ABC Thursday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET.
