India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed that he apologized to Latest Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell after Arshdeep Singh struck him with the ball in the course of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
After being smashed for 2 sixes, the pacer fired a return throw in anger, which hit Mitchell. The Kiwi was furious as Arshdeep walked off without apologizing. Suryakumar rushed to intervene. The incident drew boos from the Ahmedabad crowd, but tensions eased after the match, with Arshdeep and Mitchell sharing a lightweight moment. Replays also showed him apologizing to Mitchell after Suryakumar’s intervention.
Nonetheless, the lCC fined Arshdeep 15% of his match fee and handed him one demerit point.
“Heat of the moment mein kabhi kabhi ho jaata hai (It happens sometimes). At the moment you don’t fully understand what is occurring. But later, I told paaji, that this just isn’t the way it happens. He then spoke to Mitchell and it was a lightweight moment,” Suryakumar told PTI.
“He took it in his stride. But it surely was very essential for me to go and tell Daryl Mitchell myself, because as a frontrunner, what example you set on the bottom, that can be very essential. So I went and told him (Mitchell) the identical thing, if Arshdeep did it deliberately, then I’m sorry. And even when he didn’t do it deliberately, I’m sorry,” he added.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir was of the contrasting opinion. In a recent interview, he dismissed the necessity for any apology, backing Arshdeep’s response. He stressed that aggression is natural in high-pressure games, especially after conceding boundaries, and said he would welcome more such responses from his players.
Gambhir added that representing the country comes with intensity. While he acknowledged Arshdeep’s apology as a positive gesture, he made it clear it wasn’t mandatory, insisting that ‘there aren’t any friends on the cricket field.’
