Steven Gerrard has described Ruben Amorim’s treatment of Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United as ‘out of order’.

Mainoo had been considering a move away from United within the January transfer window after struggling to secure an everyday role within the team under Amorim.

Before Amorim’s sacking in January, Mainoo had not began a Premier League game this season and his only full 90 minutes got here against Grimsby Town within the Carabao Cup in August.

Under Michael Carrick, Mainoo has began all 10 of United’s matches and delivered impressive performances in wins over Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Gerrard believes Mainoo now ‘walks into the England squad’ and said he ‘felt sorry’ for the 20-year-old’s situation under Amorim.

When asked if he believes that Mainoo will probably be in England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, Gerrard told TNT Sports: ‘Yes, because I feel he’s a implausible player. He done well within the last tournament [Euro 2024].

‘Felt really sorry for him when it comes to the child’s profession under Amorim. I feel it was out of order that he never got any opportunity, especially with Man United being so inconsistent.

‘But not surprised that Michael Carrick [started to play him]. I feel that was considered one of the straight wins in the event you walk right into a job, in the event you like. Get Kobbie Mainoo back in, get him smiling, give him game time and minutes, and get him fit and as much as the speed where everyone knows he can play.

‘He’s now at a level where he walks within the England squad, never mind Amorim not playing him.

‘He walks into the England squad if he’s playing often for Man United.’
