As AI makes inroads into the worlds of editorial and media, web sites are scrambling to ascertain ground rules for its usage. This week, Wikipedia banned using AI-generated text by its editors—even though it stopped wanting banning AI outright from the location’s editorial processes.
In a recent policy change, the location now states that the “using LLMs to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited.” This recent language updates and clarifies previous, vaguer language that stated that LLMs “shouldn’t be used to generate recent Wikipedia articles from scratch.”
