Jasprit Bumrah Set to Feature in Mumbai Indians Opener Against Kolkata Knight Riders
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has returned and is accessible for selection within the team’s opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday on the Wankhede Stadium.
Earlier this month, Bumrah had reported to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for workload management, as per ESPNcricinfo. Nonetheless, speaking on the pre-match press conference ahead of the season opener, Jayawardene confirmed that the premier fast bowler has rejoined the squad and is fit to play against KKR.
“Bumrah is back with the squad. He’s available to play,” Mahela Jayawardene said.
Mahela Jayawardene further noted that players, particularly bowlers, have faced significant workload as a result of continuous cricket within the lead-up to and in the course of the 2026 T20 World Cup, adding that such challenges are expected and have to be rigorously managed throughout the IPL.
“All of them had to accumulate to the World Cup. The World Cup was quite intense as well. I mean, there was a variety of cricket played. There have been a few Test series going as well before that. After which leading as much as the T20 World Cup, there have been a variety of bilateral tournaments.”
“The workloads of a few of them, I mean, most of them are bowlers who needed that bit of additional bake. After which the World Cup itself was quite high intensity, travelling, playing,” he said.
“That’s part and parcel of it. And we knew that going into this IPL, there will likely be those type of situations. So we just should manage that,” Jayawardene added.
