Roy Jones Jr. went viral this past weekend for some wild corner advice he gave to considered one of his fighters.
Following what was an incredible profession in the game of boxing, Roy Jones Jr. stays involved in the game as an analyst and a coach.
This past Saturday night, he was on job as considered one of his fighters was competing on the undercard of Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman.
And something he did in the course of the fight ended up going viral online, with some fans criticising him for the treatment of his fighter, Kevin Newman II.
Jones Jr. issues an apology after explosive mid-fight speech
On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Newman II defeated Elijah Garcia via a majority decision after being down within the fight.
In the midst of the fight, Jones Jr. delivered an explosive speech to Newman II after he began the fight slow and it getting away from him.
During his speech, the previous boxing champion told his fighter to either ‘exit and fight that motherf—– or don’t fight’, occurring to inform his fighter to ‘fight or quit boxing’.
Fortunately the speech clearly sparked something in Newman II who went on to show the tide of the fight and subsequently pick up the win.
But now just a number of days faraway from the fight, Jones Jr. has issued an apology online having had time to reflect on his explosive speech.
“Hey, what’s happening awesome fans of mine,” Jones Jr. began his statement.
“I just wanted to return on this morning to be apologetic for the specific language that I used to be forced to make use of over the weekend. The common approach was not getting the job done and my job as a coach is to get the job done so I needed to do what I needed to do.”
Despite this video having gone viral, this isn’t the primary time a coach has needed to be brutally honest with their fighter to try to get a response out of them.
“It wasn’t what I desired to do nevertheless it was crucial and it got the job done, so I apologize for the specific language, I’ll attempt to be certain it doesn’t occur again but I can’t make no guarantees because I really like boxing,” he continued.
