UFC commentator Jon Anik has backed Nate Diaz’s decision to not entertain a trilogy fight against Conor McGregor.

UFC fans were extremely hopeful that Nate Diaz would return to the promotion later this yr to tackle Conor McGregor in an enormous trilogy fight.

Despite that, the potential of that took a giant hit recently when it was announced that Diaz will make his MMA comeback against Mike Perry on the MVP MMA Netflix card, scheduled for May 16.

And earlier this week, Diaz revealed that he turned down a proposal from the UFC to return this yr to compete against ‘The Notorious’ Irishman.

Jon Anik backs Diaz’s decision to show down McGregor trilogy

The 40-year-old’s reason for turning down a fight against his longtime rival is because he believes he can still compete against the very best fighters on the planet, and he asked for a fight against Charles Oliveira.

Although the vast majority of UFC fans are upset that the trilogy fight against McGregor may not occur, UFC commentator Jon Anik has explained why Diaz’s decision is ‘refreshing’.

“I believe it’s the most important fight and it makes quite a lot of sense,” Anik told Submission Radio.

“That’s not the fight that he (was) on the lookout for and I believe that’s a little bit bit refreshing if I could take that side of it, to listen to Nate say that he wants something that perhaps competitively for him is more juicy, that he’s not necessarily there for the pageantry or the most important possible pay check.”

As an alternative, the frontrunner now to fight McGregor in his targeted comeback is Max Holloway, who recently lost his BMF title at UFC 326.

Having been waiting to make his return for some time now, it’s believed that the promotion could also be targeting International Fight Week’s UFC 329 event for his comeback.

“It could be a little bit inside baseball of me to think about that Max Holloway fight within the terms that I do but I would like to see that.

“The Charles Oliveira fight makes quite a lot of sense as well and as I’m commentating the BMF title fight with Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway, the entire time, (Joe) Rogan and I are considering, wow, not man, that is boring.

“To me, Charles and Conor for the BMF belt makes quite a lot of sense, Holloway makes quite a lot of sense.”

Despite Diaz’s signing with MVP MMA for his next fight, it likely doesn’t rule out a possible future return to the UFC for a possible McGregor trilogy.
