Could the best goal scorer in NHL history have played his last game in Toronto? Well, as Alex Ovechkin told John Walton, the Washington Capitals Radio Play-by-Play Voice, he’s waiting until the summer to make a call after he talks along with his family.
That was the main clip making the rounds prior to the Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs game on Wednesday night, as speculation continues to grow about what the long run will hold for Alex Ovechkin. Could he come back for an additional season? Will he retire, or will he return to Russia to play within the KHL?
NHL Rumors: Alex Ovechkin Only Knows His Future within the NHL
As NHLRumors.com has been reporting the choice about Ovechkin’s future stays in his hands, and he isn’t tipping his hand a technique or one other. Before the sport on Wednesday, Ovechkin met with reporters and expanded on his comments with Walton.
John Walton: “Alex, there was lots of speculation about whether or not this will probably be your final season. Have you ever made that call?”
Ovechkin: “Not yet. We’re going to make a call in the summertime. I actually have to consult with my family with Ted (Leonsis), with KP, Mike, and we now have to make a call in the summertime.”
As he told those reporters in Toronto, “It’s one thing if I used to be 35 or 25, but if you end up 40, you might have to think in regards to the future.”
The difficulty for the Washington Capitals is that an enormous hole of their lineup may very well be gone. Ovechkin has recorded 61 points (31 goals and 30 assists) this season with the Capitals. Again, this will probably be tough to interchange. But how he feels health-wise and what the organization does within the offseason will even be aspects on this decision.

Nonetheless, as he told Dave McCarthy of NHL.com and SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Ovechkin still loves the sport.
“Yeah, I’m still enjoy it. I’m still having fun and completely happy to be with the boys within the locker room,” Ovechkin said.
As he has stated repeatedly, he isn’t sure whether that is the tip. Ovechkin will proceed to figure it out. Whether he has a farewell or retirement tour stays to be seen. Everybody is different in how they wish to exit.
