Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Now 2026’s Top-Grossing Film

First reported by Variety, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially claimed the highest spot on the 2026 box office, pulling in $629 million globally after just two weekends of release. The animated sequel scored a $69 million second weekend domestically, dropping 48 percent from its $131.7 million opening weekend. Through 12 days of release, the film has earned $308 million in North America alone, alongside $320 million overseas from 81 territories.

To place the domestic pace into perspective, the film pulled in $34.5 million on its opening day, crossed $100 million by day three, and hit $190 million by the top of its first weekend. Even on weekdays, it was still clearing $14 million to $16 million per day in its first full week. Top-earning international markets include Mexico with $47.8 million, the UK and Ireland with $37.4 million, Germany with $29 million, and France with $23.9 million.

It’s a powerful pace, though not entirely surprising given how the primary film performed. The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended up because the second-highest-grossing release of 2023 with $1.3 billion, and the sequel looks prefer it’s tracking toward the $1 billion mark in the approaching weeks. Whether it holds onto the highest spot for the yr is one other query entirely, with Spider-Man: Brand Recent Day, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and Avengers: Doomsday all on the way in which.

Video game movies proceed to have a robust yr on the box office. The Mortal Kombat II movie arrives on May 8, and there’s a Street Fighter movie set for October. Between those and the Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s massive run, studios are clearly seeing the worth in adapting gaming franchises for the large screen.
