Octagón Jr. was unmasked during Saturday night’s AAA On Fox broadcast, but a brand new report suggests the controversial finish wasn’t purported to play out that way.
Within the match, Original El Grande Americano defeated Octagón Jr. in under five and a half minutes. The finish saw Americano rip off Octagón’s mask before forcing him to submit with an ankle lock.
Under traditional AAA rules, removing an opponent’s mask typically ends in a right away disqualification. In response to a report from BodySlam+, sources inside each AAA and WWE indicated that a DQ was indeed the planned end result. Nevertheless, a miscommunication occurred, and the referee never called for it. As an alternative, Octagón tapped out moments after being unmasked, which drew heavy backlash from the group.
The confusion wasn’t limited to fans, as each the English and Spanish commentary teams were reportedly caught off guard by how the match ended.
Following the bout, OG Americano was confronted by El Grande Americano II, resulting in a brawl between the 2. Americano II then issued a challenge for a mask vs. mask match, which is reportedly being lined up for AAA Noche de Los Grandes on May 30. AAA has not yet officially confirmed the event.
