Two individuals are dead and diverse others are injured after a automobile ploughed right into a busy pedestrian area in Germany.

The grey SUV smashed right into a crowd of individuals in Leipzig city centre on Monday afternoon.

The vehicle then sped away before the driving force was apprehended, Sachsen Police said.

The town’s mayor said two people were killed. Officials added that two others were seriously injured, with 20 other casualties.

Major Mayor Burkhard Jung told reporters on the scene that they didn’t know anything in regards to the alleged driver or their ‘motivation’.

He added: ‘We’re devastated. All I can do straight away is express my solidarity with the victims’ families.

‘All the things else will now rely on the work of the police and investigating authorities.’

The automobile had was the pedestrian zone at Augustusplatz within the east German city, near Grimmaische Straße, which results in the principal shopping district.

The SUV – which local Leipziger Volkszeitung reports was a gray VW Taigo – then reportedly drove roughly 500metres all of the approach to Leipzig’s market square.

Emergency services declared a mass casualty incident because it was unfolding, and numerous law enforcement officials were on the scene.

Not less than 10 ambulances and two helicopters have been deployed.

Leipzig is situated southwest of Berlin and has greater than 630,000 inhabitants, making it certainly one of the largest cities in eastern Germany.
