Richard Torrez Jr. believes fans are overlooking Xander Zayas heading into his fight against Jaron Ennis on June 27.
Torrez, who trains under the identical Top Rank banner as Zayas, said he has been surprised by how quickly many fans have dismissed the unbeaten junior middleweight champion against Ennis, widely viewed as certainly one of boxing’s top pound-for-pound fighters.
“I believe persons are underestimating Xander a lot. It’s insane to me,” said Torrez to Fight Hub TV. “Individuals are all like, ‘Xander’s not ready for Boots. Boots goes to scrub him out.’ Xander’s a world champ, like a multiple belt world champ.”
Torrez said many fans are overlooking Zayas due to his age quite than what he has already achieved contained in the ring.
“I believe persons are just overlooking him because he’s so young,” said Torrez. “I’m giving it to Xander. I believe his boxing ability, his ring IQ, his presence, his stature, it’s going to be tough for anybody to beat him.”
The unbeaten heavyweight contender also gave a technical breakdown for a way he believes Zayas can trouble Ennis.
“I believe Xander has to faint and get Boots off his rhythm,” Torrez said. “I’d wish to see Xander proceed his lateral movement. With the ability to make him pick up his feet and move goes to throw a counterpuncher off his game.”
Torrez added that Ennis has looked dominant partly due to the style matchups he has received in recent fights, though he still praised Ennis as certainly one of boxing’s elite fighters.
“I believe Boots is an incredible fighter,” said Torrez. “But I do think it’s going to be a unique fight against Xander because this guy isn’t fitting the establishment of the last couple fighters that Boots has fought.”
Zayas and Ennis are expected to fulfill in certainly one of the most important fights of the summer, with many fans already treating Ennis because the clear favorite.
