AFTER SLIPPING to 54-5 on the morning of day two at Edgbaston, England were staring down the barrel at a sizeable first-innings deficit against a jubilant West Indies.
Nevertheless, a stand of 115 between Joe Root (87) and Ben Stokes (54) steadied the ship before Jamie Smith continued his impressive begin to his Test profession with a scintillating knock of 95 from 109 balls, denied a primary century when he was unlucky to be bowled by Shamar Joseph.
