It’s some of the exciting events in all of sports, a Game 7 within the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Buffalo Sabres evened the series with the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6. After holding a 3-1 lead in the sport, the Canadiens would hand over seven unanswered goals on the approach to an 8-3 loss.
Now, each teams are focused on a winner-take-all game that might send them to the Eastern Conference Finals. Now, Phillip Danault is speaking out about what’s going to be needed to win Game 7, per Sean Farrell of NHL.com.
“Obviously, we’d like a greater start,” Danault said. “It must be our greatest game. I do know we’re young nevertheless it’s no excuse. We understand how we will play and we understand how good our group will be.”
The Canadiens didn’t start great, giving up a goal to Rasmus Dahlin just 32 seconds into the competition. Still, Arber Xhekaj would answer just over a minute later. Then, Ivan Demidov added a goal on the ability play before Jake Evans added a shorthanded goal, giving Montreal the 3-1 lead just 10:14 into the competition. From there, the Sabres dominated. They got one goal back in the primary period, before adding three goals in each the second and third.
“The thing we’ve to herald Game 7 is our A game and we didn’t have it there last game,” Danault said. “That’s probably the one thing I’d say. Otherwise it’s pretty 50/50. It’s a very good series. It could go either way. So if we bring our A game we imagine in our possibilities. But when we play like last game it would be difficult.”
Montreal had just 22 shots on goal, as in comparison with the 36 of the Sabres. Meanwhile, they racked up 58 penalty minutes, resulting in six man-advantage opportunities for the Sabres. They might convert on 4 of them.
