Former UFC Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has verbally slammed the promotion’s president, Dana White, over his past remarks on his retirement. Roughly six months ago, White appeared on the Prince St. Pizza YouTube channel, where he opened up concerning the situation of Nurmagomedov’s retirement. While “The Eagle” retired as a result of personal reasons, White believes it was as a result of money.
“We had our Muslim world champion (Nurmagomedov), but the issue is, they took him on a tour to Muslim countries. He went to Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and so they showered him with money,” White said. “He earned a lot money that he now not needed to fight. On top of that, his father passed away, which played a giant role in his decision.”
Nevertheless, Khabib didn’t take the statements calmly and broke his silence on the matter. Via his Instagram stories, the 37-year-old cleared his side of the story and slammed White for his comments on him earning “thousands and thousands.”
“Sometimes I read these headlines, and I’m not a fan of giving my commentaries to each nonsense on the web, but when Dana talks, the news spread fast,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “I’ll say this: I swear by Allah that is an absolute lie. No one ever gave me those thousands and thousands, and it’s also not true that I left the game because I made numerous money. The entire world already knows the true truth – I’ve spoken about it repeatedly and there’s no have to repeat it,” Khabib finished. (quotes translated from Russian.)
Since retiring in Jul. 2020, Nurmagomedov has recently opened up about still getting offers for a comeback but has continued to reject all such proposals.
