Ruturaj Gaikwad and CSK Fined After Heavy Defeat to GT in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the remaining of the squad have been fined after the team committed a slow over-rate offence for the second time in IPL 2026. Gaikwad was fined ₹24 lakh, while the remaining players will face a penalty of either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever is lower.

During their final league-stage match against Gujarat Titans on the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, May 21, CSK failed to finish their overs throughout the required time after GT posted 229/4 batting first. In consequence, CSK were penalised on the sphere and had to maintain an additional fielder contained in the circle for the ultimate over bowled by Mukesh Choudhary.

The left-arm pacer conceded 13 runs within the over before dismissing Washington Sundar off the last ball.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans on the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad,” an announcement on iplt20.com read.

“As this was his team’s second offence (first offence in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The remainder of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, shall be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the statement continued.

Chennai Super Kings were earlier penalised for a slow over rate during their home game against Delhi Capitals on April 11, marking their first offence of IPL 2026. Ruturaj Gaikwad has now turn into the second captain this season to be fined twice for slow over-rate violations after Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings.

CSK Eliminated from IPL 2026 Playoff Race After Third Straight Defeat

Coming into their final league-stage match, Chennai Super Kings still had a slim likelihood of reaching the playoffs. Nonetheless, their hopes faded after Gujarat Titans posted an enormous total, while CSK were bowled out for 140 with greater than six overs remaining.

CSK finished their IPL 2026 campaign with 12 points from 14 matches and missed out on playoff qualification for the third consecutive season.
