That response stemmed from his belief that several of his teammates were just as deserving of the honour.

“I’m truly blessed but I don’t know if I deserve it because there have been so many others who could have won it,” Thompson told the Inquirer at Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

“Lots of our guys played well, a variety of guys carried us so I’m truly blessed and honored.”

Within the winner-take-all contest, which Ginebra won 88-76, the Gilas Pilipinas guard delivered a near triple-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Among the many other standouts within the series were reigning Best Player of the Conference RJ Abarrientos, who scored 13 points in Game 7, and Troy Rosario, who added 13 points and 7 rebounds within the championship-clinching victory.

For Thompson, nevertheless, individual accolades took a back seat to ending Ginebra’s title drought.

“We, as a team, bounced back and the great performances individually just followed,” he said.

“Overall, we didn’t really consider the past or the long run, we just stayed within the moment, focused on the sport and the result followed.”
