Shapoor Zadran passes away on the age of 38 after prolonged illness

Former Afghanistan pace bowler Shapoor Zadran passed away on Tuesday (July 8) on the age of 38 after a chronic illness. Zadran had been battling Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), which is an immune system disorder. He had been treated within the Delhi-NCR region for the past few months.

Afghanistan Cricket Board shared the news of his demise on X.

“Shapoor Zadran was one in every of the foundation-lying figures of Afghanistan cricket, whose dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment played an important role within the rise and development of the sport in our country. He was among the many proud cricketers who stood at the guts of Afghanistan’s early cricket journey and helped construct the trail that brought Afghan cricket to the international stage,” ACB wrote.

Nevertheless, Zadran had a decade-long international profession where he claimed 43 wickets in 44 ODIs and 37 wickets in 36 T20Is between 2009 and 2020. Zadran also famously hit the winning runs in Afghanistan’s historic win within the 2015 ODI World Cup against Scotland as well.

“Beyond his achievements on the sphere, Shapoor Zadran was a real source of inspiration for a lot of young Afghan cricketers and for cricket followers internationally. His fighting spirit, determination, and love for the sport gave hope to many and encouraged a generation to dream larger and consider in the longer term of Afghanistan cricket,” the ACB statement said.
