Hampshire captain Ben Brown signs until 2027

Hampshire’s County Championship captain Ben Brown has signed a one-year contract extension, which sees him remain at Utilita Bowl until no less than the top of the 2027 season.

Brown, 37, joined the Rose and Crown from Sussex ahead of the 2022 season before taking up the reins as red-ball captain in 2025.

Just one Hampshire player, Nick Gubbins, has scored more County Championship runs than Brown since he joined in 2022.

His 3,082 runs contain six centuries and 15 fifties, with a career-best of 165 not out at Utilita Bowl to establish an innings victory over Surrey.

Ben Brown, said: “I’m really pleased to remain at Hampshire for an additional season, I’ve really enjoyed the last 4 and a bit years I’ve been here.

“We’ve got an ideal squad, able to competing with the highest across all formats of the sport and under Russell, I’m sure we will bring a primary trophy back to Utilita Bowl since 2022.”

This season, Brown is Hampshire’s third-leading run-scorer with 470 to his name. He has surpassed 50 five times, happening to succeed in a century within the win over Yorkshire at Headingley.

With the gloves, Brown has claimed 200 catches, probably the most of any Division One keeper since 2022.

In white-ball cricket, Brown has helped Hampshire to the ultimate of the lads’s One-Day Cup twice, in 2023 and 2025, and recorded his highest List A rating – 139 not out – against Northamptonshire at Utilita Bowl in 2024.

Giles White, Director of Cricket, said: “Since joining the Club, Ben has grow to be an integral a part of the squad. He’s a improbable player, and his experience and leadership proceed to drive standards inside the group.

“He’s began the season strongly and can be a key figure for us heading into the business end of the Championship season.”
