“The Challenge” is heading to a brand new home, but it surely’s bringing back a well-known theme. The upcoming Season 42, “The Challenge: Cutthroat,” will debut on August 5 on Paramount+. The show will still have a weekly rollout with latest episodes dropping at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET.
The series, now billed as a Paramount+ original, has aired on MTV since its debut in 1998. While the “All Stars” spinoff was a streaming show, that is the primary time the flagship will likely be exclusively streamed.
“Cutthroat” is a returning theme for “The Challenge,” because it was the title of Season 20, which aired in 2010. It was also the birthplace of the “Johnny Bananas backpack,” so it only feels fitting that each C.T. Tamburello and Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio are back.
Filmed in Thailand, this season will feature 24 competitors — a combination of each newcomers and veterans — fighting for his or her share of the $500,000 prize. The group will likely be divided into three teams. “The one method to take home a share of the money prize is to cross the finish line together as a unit,” the press release reads, but in fact, there’s a twist. Ultimately, the team captain may have the facility to come to a decision tips on how to split the winnings — or take all of it for themselves. And on this group, that’s likely.
Julie Pizzi, Justin Booth and Jacob Lane function executive producers for Bunim/Murray. Diego Amson, Brad Tiemann and Joe Awful are co-executive producers, and Margaret Morales is supervising producer. Benjamin Hurvitz and Melissa Tallerine are executive producers, with Angela Liao as executive in control of production for MTV.
