Gavin McKenna finally got to placed on the jersey Toronto has been waiting to see him in. The Maple Leafs’ No. 1 overall pick within the 2026 NHL Draft hit the ice in his latest No. 92 uniform for the primary time this week, joining fellow prospects as development camp got underway.

McKenna described how natural it felt once he was back on the ice.
“If you’re on the market, it’s pretty easy to be dialed in,” McKenna said in development camp. “It’s the sport I’ve played my entire life. So once I’m on the market, I’m having fun, I feel comfortable and assured. After which off the ice, you form of need to let go and hang around together with your buddies and get to know everyone. Just benefit from the city and the time I came.”
The jersey number itself got here with its own storyline.
McKenna wore No. 72 throughout his time with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers and at Penn State, however the Maple Leafs’ free agent signing of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has worn 72 for many of his profession, forced a change.
With Nos. 9 and 27 each retired by the franchise, McKenna settled on 92, reaching out to former Leaf Jeff O’Neill, certainly one of only three players to previously wear the number, to be certain that he was comfortable with the selection.
