Topex Robinson was given one task after being named to educate La Salle, an enormous one where several greater names before him failed at: Bring the UAAP men’s basketball championship back to Taft.
He understood the massive responsibility and set out to attain that goal from Day 1.
“[The job is] never gonna be easy. Even in the beginning once I took over, obviously, there are marching orders since it’s been some time (since La Salle won a championship),” Robinson told the Inquirer over the phone.
“[La Salle was] eager for [a title] and so they aren’t gonna cut across the bushes anymore, they’re gonna go straight, wala nang paligoy-ligoy—they wanna win a championship and naturally you wouldn’t say no (when that job is given to you),” he went on.
With a wealthy basketball history, La Salle’s thirst was comprehensible because it has been seven years because the Green Archers last reigned supreme.
And surprisingly hiring Robinson to be on the helm turned out to be the appropriate alternative as the previous Phoenix coach within the Philippine Basketball Association delivered using an approach he has preached since his botched NCAA days with Lyceum.
Identity instilled
He admits to having doubts about his capabilities as a coach, especially when those NCAA heartaches got here to mind.
“You furthermore mght should imagine in yourself that you would deliver, because while you ask any individual, nobody in his right way of thinking would say they don’t wish to win,” Robinson added. “Like all of the teams, when you’re gonna ask them what your ultimate goal is, it’s to win a championship.”
Robinson put his identity within the Archers that modified every part.
“You could have to have your individual identity that you simply wanna sell to the players, also the entire staff that’s put under your care,” he said. “To every his own, but how do you ensure that that it’s clear and you would really articulate it, that’s where the work really gets hard.
“The culture that we’re constructing is to maintain one another, it is de facto broad but what does it mean? That’s where the work happened. For us, I assume we want to ensure that that the players left under our care should feel heard, that they really matter in order that became our way,” he added.
“It was easy, but the way you execute it’s where the hard part is available in. But when you do it, you get to be there, that’s where the magic happens.” INQ
