Can the bias in algorithms help us see our own?

Morewedge and his collaborators — Begüm Çeliktutan and Romain Cadario, each at Erasmus University within the Netherlands — devised a series of experiments designed to tease out people’s social biases (including racism, sexism, and ageism). The team then compared research participants’ recognition of how those biases coloured their very own decisions versus decisions made by an algorithm. Within the experiments, participants sometimes saw the selections of real algorithms. But there was a catch: other times, the selections attributed to algorithms were actually the participants’ decisions, in disguise.

Across the board, participants were more more likely to see bias in the selections they thought got here from algorithms than in their very own decisions. Participants also saw as much bias in the selections of algorithms as they did in the selections of other people. The researchers repeated this setup several times, testing for race, gender, age, and attractiveness bias within the profiles of Lyft drivers and Airbnb hosts.
