The web European cross-border market reached a turnover of 237 billion euros in 2023. This is a rise of 32 percent in comparison with the 12 months before. European online stores generated 107 billion euros in cross-border turnover.
In 2022, European cross-border ecommerce was value 179 billion euros. In that 12 months, online stores in Europe generated a cross-border turnover of 105.5 billion euros. This was a record-high amount of turnover. Last 12 months, they achieved a rise of 1.4 percent and generated 107 billion euros in turnover across borders.
European B2C ecommerce value 741 billion euros
These data come from the 6th edition of the ‘TOP 500 B2C Cross-Border Retail Europe’ from Cross-Border Commerce Europe. That is an annual rating of the largest 500 European cross-border online stores. The report doesn’t include travel.
32% of all European online sales got here from cross-border sales.
In response to the report, the entire online B2C turnover for goods in Europe reached a turnover of 741 billion euros. This is a rise of 13 percent in comparison with 2022. Of that total, 32 percent was generated with cross-border sales.
Cross-border turnover decreases within the UK
The report also highlights the largest European ecommerce markets. German online stores generated 43 billion euros in cross-border turnover. This was a rise of 28 percent. Cross-border sales in the UK fell with a historically low 1.8 percent. Online stores in that country generated 27.5 billion euros in cross-border turnover. In 2022, they generated 28 billion euros.

Other European markets increased significantly of their cross-border turnover. French online stores generated 32 billion euros across borders (a rise of 30 percent). Spanish online stores reached 18 billion euros (increase of fifty percent) and Dutch online stores generated 7 billion euros (a rise of 45 percent).
GMV of top 500 online stores decreased 18%
The largest 500 online cross-border sellers in Europe decreased in turnover, on account of the unstable economic environment and competition from the US and Chinese brands. The GMV of the highest 500 decreased 18 percent, to 50 billion euros in 2023.
Ikea generated 5.2 billion euros in cross-border sales.
In response to the report, Ikea is the highest 1 European cross-border seller. It achieved 5.2 billion euros in cross-border turnover. Collectively, the highest 10 represent 19 percent of the highest 500’s total sales.
