Consumer demand for the most recent AI technology is heating up. The launch of OpenAI’s latest flagship model, GPT-4o, has now driven the corporate’s biggest-ever spike in revenue on mobile, despite the model being freely available on the internet. GPT-4o, launched last Monday, can handle text, speech, and video, and delivers real-time responsiveness and a variety of emotive voice options, making it a way more powerful model than what was offered before. This technical innovation can also be pushing more users to upgrade to OpenAI’s paid subscription, in keeping with recent data from app intelligence firm Appfigures.

Though OpenAI said GPT-4o could be offered to users on its free tier, that promise didn’t stretch to incorporate users of its ChatGPT app on mobile. As an alternative, mobile users are being pushed to upgrade to its $19.99 monthly subscription, ChatGPT Plus, in the event that they wish to experiment with OpenAI’s most up-to-date launch.

That strategic decision is generating increased demand for subscriptions amongst mobile users and has now led to the biggest-ever revenue spike OpenAI has yet seen on mobile devices.

Notes Appfigures, the ChatGPT mobile app’s net revenue first jumped 22% on the day of the GPT-4o launch and continued to grow in the next days. On Tuesday, net revenue was as much as $900,000 — nearing twice that of the app’s every day average of $491,000. (The online revenue figure is calculated after Apple and Google take their commission.)

Before this, ChatGPT’s second-biggest spike was in April, however it was much smaller — merely an abnormally high revenue day, not a large jump.

Last week, Monday through Friday, the ChatGPT mobile app earned $4.2 million in net revenue across each the App Store and Google Play, the firm found, which represents the most important revenue spike the app has seen up to now. The jump in revenue indicates there’s real consumer demand for trying out the most recent experiments in AI, particularly on mobile, even when it’s dearer than a Netflix subscription.

Apple’s App Store contributed the vast majority of the brand new revenue, at 81%, and the U.S. was the highest market, accounting for $1.8 million in revenue. Other top countries also included Germany ($282K), the U.K. ($212K), Japan ($210K), France ($147K), Canada ($134K), Korea ($123K), Brazil ($117K), Australia ($102K) and Turkey ($89K).

What’s more, the revenue trend doesn’t yet seem like slowing down, and the truth is, could also be sustaining and even increasing, the info indicates. Stay tuned.
