To make deliveries to customers in the UK more sustainable, Amazon is increasingly using so-called micromobility hubs. Step-by-step, the corporate is revamping its delivery network. The primary micromobility hub in Northern Ireland recently opened.
Micromobility hubs are essentially sorting centers in urban areas. Amazon is busy implementing a network of those hubs in major cities to scale back its reliance on traditional delivery vans and their associated carbon footprint.
Last mile delivery
Packages are brought from Amazon’s larger success centers to those hubs. From there, the last mile delivery to the shopper takes place via electric cargo bikes (photo) and even on foot.

The corporate states that “thousands and thousands of Amazon packages” have already been sustainably delivered from micromobility hubs in London, Manchester, Glasgow, and recently Belfast. The hubs help improve air quality and alleviate congestion on city roads, based on the market leader.
Climate Pledge
With its Climate Pledge, co-signed by a whole lot of other major corporations, Amazon goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. That is ten years sooner than the ambition outlined within the Paris Climate Agreement. To succeed in that goal, the ecommerce giant is making various facets of its operations more sustainable.
Besides the last mile, as is the case with the micromobility hubs, Amazon’s sustainability initiatives also can involve earlier steps within the logistics process, equivalent to the so-called middle mile and first mile. To decarbonize its transportation network in Europe, Amazon is, for instance, shifting from roads to trains and boats.

Moreover, Amazon has initiated dozens of renewable energy projects in Europe and has switched to using only recyclable boxes, bags, and envelopes for deliveries in Europe.
