2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

FX

Weekly Commentary (Updated: June 18, 2024): We have now 217 names within the awards discussion for supporting drama actresses this 12 months, in comparison with 196 last 12 months and 319 and 385 within the previous two years. This category is more likely to yield nominees from the fewest variety of shows.

Netflix’s final season of its royal drama “The Crown” is predicted to secure nominations for frontrunners Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville, who occupy the highest two spots. FX’s “Shōgun” follows closely, with three strong contenders—Fumi Nikaido, Moeka Hoshi, and Yuka Kouri—all having a good shot at a nomination.

The competition is fierce between the ladies of Apple’s “The Morning Show” and HBO/Max’s “The Gilded Age.” Each shows have not less than half a dozen potential nominees.

The strongest contenders for “The Morning Show” are Greta Lee, Holland Taylor, and Nicole Beharie. Meanwhile, “The Gilded Age” features Emmy favorites corresponding to Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. Based on recent trends, specializing in one standout from each show is probably not the best-predicting strategy moderately than dividing votes amongst multiple candidates, as Emmy voters not are inclined to vote that way.

For a possible surprise, control Kristin Scott Thomas from “Slow Horses,” who could join her co-star Gary Oldman, or veteran Leslie Uggams from “Fallout,” especially if her co-stars Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell receive nominations of their respective categories.

This 12 months, multiple performances across various genres may also get recognition. For instance, Anthony Ramos received a nod for “Hamilton” despite his superior work in “In Treatment.” This trend may gain advantage someone like Emmy winner Archie Panjabi for “Hijack,” who also delivered a highly acclaimed performance in Hulu’s “Under the Bridge.”

Nominations-round voting is open from June 13 to June 24. Voting for peer group-specific panels (if applicable) takes place between June 28 and July 8. The Emmy nominations shall be announced on July 17. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies shall be held on Sept. 7-8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Sept. 15.
